Sierra Madre has its own emergency services. This community of approximately 10,000 people has its own municipal government, which oversees the police department, fire department and other emergency services. There are also hospital facilities available in the city, and ambulance services are available throughout. The city’s parks and recreations facilities do include some trails. These are closed at dusk and safety personnel advise that residents and visitors do not venture out onto them after sundown, as the risk of getting lost in the canyons and wild areas is very real when visibility is low.

The Sierra Madre Police department is contacted for emergency services via the same 911 system that is used all over the nation. It is a smaller police department, and Sierra Madre is not known for having a high crime rate. The city is generally considered a safe place to be, and is popular with families. The entire police force consists of around 20 officers, with other individuals being employed in administrative and part-time positions. The leadership of the police department consists of officers who answer to a Chief of Police, who is then accountable to the city government.

The Sierra Madre Fire Department is one of the city’s most unique features. This is the only all-volunteer fire department left in all of Los Angeles County. It has been in existence for almost 100 years and serves a wide area that includes several different environments. The fire department is also responsible for administering the city’s EMT services, which serve the same area and which also participate in area-wide protection along with other agencies. The city only has one fire station, which is located in the downtown area of the community. In addition to the leadership, there are approximately 30 people serving as firefighters for the community.

Sierra Madre hospital facilities are mostly located in the nearby communities. There are major medical centers in both Pasadena and Arcadia, which are a very short distance away. Emergency services to and from the hospitals, provided they occur within the organization’s area of coverage, will be handled by the EMT services provided by the Sierra Madre Fire Department. There are also plenty of non-emergency medical services located around the area, including walk-in and regular clinics and specialty services. The community’s proximity to major Interstates makes reaching facilities that are farther away very fast and easy.
