In the late 1890s, a simple transaction between a local woman and a plant vendor started something that would become famous worldwide. A Chinese Wisteria, a long, blooming type of vine, that was planted on that day has grown to become the largest in the world. Now spanning over an acre in total size, the huge plant is featured once per year at the Wisteria Festival, one of the most popular of Sierra Madre annual events and one which draws people from all over the nation. There are numerous other events held in this community, as well.
During the beginning of May, the Sierra Madre Art Festival is thrown by the city. This is the Sierra Madre art fair that constitutes the largest such event in the city. There are plenty of events to attend, plenty of galleries and exhibits to explore and, for those who like all of the finer things in life in one sitting, there are also wine-tasting opportunities galore. This community has events such as these year-round, many of which bring the community out to celebrate together, and which draw people from other areas.
Memorial Park is the site of the city’s annual concerts. These events include a variety of musical offerings and provide residents and visitors alike with a pleasant activity for a summer evening. The community also hosts other events in its extensive system of parks, which include holiday-themed offerings. In the spring, take the kids down for the annual Easter egg hunt. In the fall, they can vent their desire to paint on the walls by painting on the windows, instead, as part of an annual event that celebrates the Halloween season. There are also Sierra Madre annual events for the winter holidays, including Christmas and the season at large.
Sierra Madre has a cultural arts master plan that sets goals for the city in terms of art and culture. To that end, many of the Sierra Madre annual events that feature the arts are connected to programs offered by the city. There is a call for artists almost every year so that there is adequate local participation in the local events. There are also community art projects in which people can get involved via the annual events. Other holidays, such as the Fourth of July, are occasions where the city throws large events for everyone.
